University careers services read thousands of student CVs, and Sheffield's guide gets straight to the point.
- Length: about two sides of A4 for placements and graduate jobs, and one side for most part-time work.
- Layout: a common typeface, consistent headings and spacing, and short bullet points rather than dense text.
- Start points with action verbs that match the skills the employer wants, and say what you achieved.
- Tailor it: read the job description, put your most relevant experience early, and reuse the employer's keywords.
- Proofread: spelling and grammar mistakes can be enough for a rejection.
- No photo, no referees at this stage.
It also points out that many online templates are based on American resumes, which differ from UK CVs.
Good for: students applying for placements, internships and part-time jobs. Your own university's careers service is worth a visit too.
